Dystopia/Utopia

Dystopia- a community or society, usually fictional, that is in some important way undesirable or frightening.

The book "Uglies" is a dystopia for many reasons. First off, it is a controled society.
They don't have have much choice in what they become. The citizens are made to a set standard at the age of teen. Another reason is that the higher ups decide on what the future of every person is. It greatly resembles that of a communist society.

Utopia-  a community or society possessing highly desirable or perfect qualities.

When I think of what my utopia would be I think of quiet a few things. My utopia would be very in touch with nature. It would be a calm and quiet place. In my utopia people would learn to not judge each other. Every person would accept each other and not fight over differences. The cities would be kind to the enviorment with little to no pollution.

Imagery

As I gazed upon the green mountains. The scent of the open air filled my lungs with a sense of calm. I could not believe that such a place could ever exist. It was an amazing sight, to see a place that seemed so in touch with nature. The sky was more clear than I could ever imagine. I began to walk through and I was astonished by how quiet it was. I felt as though I belonged here and that I could be apart of it. Maybe I was wrong about this place, it seem to be as beautiful as one could ever imagine.

When Tally first went to the Smoke she was shown the library. "The familiar smell of dusty books overwhelmed Tally at the library door, and as she looked around, she realized that books were pretty much all the library had."

The scene I chose was when Shay takes Tally to go see the "Boss". I believe this is a important scene for many reasons. The first reason is that it is when Tally is first introduced to the smoke. It is also when the book tells that the smoke is more than just some group of people, but a civilization all its own. Another thing in this scene is that it is the first time Tally sees an old ugly. This is also when Tally sees a rusty model for the first time. Which makes her worry that Shay will get the "eating disease". Finally, this part of the story is when           Tally sees the rusty library and realizes there is more to the smoke than what she originally thought.

Relate to another story

The story I related to the Uglies is the Hunger Games. I chose this book because it is set in the future. It is divided by classes just like the Uglies. As well as the main character being forced to be apart of something she did not want to be in. That is why I chose the Hunger Games to relate to the Uglies.

Dear Ellie and Sol,




After thinking for a very long time, I have finally made my decision. My decision is to tell special circumstances the truth. I have thought long and hard about this, and here are the reasons why. First off there is the main reason, which is that if I don't then I wont be able to become pretty. The next reason is that I made a promise to Peris first and I plan on keeping that promise. Also I wont live a very kind life if i stay ugly my whole life.

Song to Story Connection

The song I chose for the story connection is Strawberry Whine by Deana Carter. I chose this song for a couple of reasons. The first, and main reason is because it talks about growing up. It tells about how she was wanting to know more about the way things are. I also feel that this song can tell about the situation with Peris. One part of the song goes: "My biggest fear was September, when he had to go".
This is a good connection in my opinion because in the story, Tally is sad when Peris leaves to become a "Pretty".  Also in the song it tells about things changing. This is a connection because through out the story you see how Tally changes as a person. This is why I chose the following song.

Special Circumstances

"Tally felt like a mouse in a cage full of hawks". The cruel pretties seem to make it feel hopeless. As if there was no chance of changing the outcome. They appear very professional. They also appear to be quite strict. Not the kind of people you want to have against you. I imagine them in suites and other professional type outfits.I also notice that they seem to be the back-bone of the city. They are the ones that keep things in order. As for personality, they seem to either be angry or have no emotions at all.

I believe it means that beauty is only what each person sees it as. It applies to the Twilight Zone episode because the normals were ugly and the freaks were the beautiful people.

In the Twilight Zone episode the idea of beauty is different than ours.

The idea of norm could be different than that of ours.

In different parts of the world there are different forms of beauty.

My Best Feature

For this post I will discuss what I think is my best physical feature. In my opinion I would have to say that it would be the scar on my left arm. I find this my best feature for a few reasons. The main reason is what is what it represents. It represents me overcoming a dark part of my life, though I will not discuss how I got the scar.

Best friend

For this post I will tell who my best friend is. That person is Nick Burkhard. I met him this year, and we have been friends ever since. We started a band together because we both like similar music. We hang out every day. And I think we will always be friends.
